For the first time ever, I managed to both remember it was farmers market day and get out of the house in time to get to the Burke Farmers Market; granted, I didn't get there until half an hour before they closed, but still. (Why are so many farmers markets locally scheduled from like 8-noon on Tuesday mornings when people, y'know, have to go to work?) I took $20 with me, and returned with a big bunch of radishes, three cucumbers, a bit more than a pint of yellow cherry tomatoes (well, somewhat less than a pint now OM NOM NOM), four bell peppers of the purple and yellow varieties, good-sized green and white acorn squash, and a wedge of chipotle cheddar cheese. I passed on the apples this time; this is the time of year that you can drive out towards Shenandoah and buy apples at the local roadside stands, so you get both tasty locally-grown apples *and* a road trip. The remaining $4 or so from my $20 bill went into the Obama/Biden donations jar, so a bumper sticker is also technically part of my haul. Let's see if people can refrain from vandalizing my car this time.
It is a glorious day today; if you're local, you should really consider heading outside. I think I'm going to do some housecleaning until C. wakes up (or I wake him up) and then maybe go to Burke Lake or some other spot I can putter around outdoors.
Two things completely unrelated to the farmers market or even each other:
What if Raffi started a hardcore punk band?
If you use or are thinking of using Restaurant.com for dining gift certificates, they've got a 70% off coupon good until Monday 10/13, with $25 gift certificates going for $3. Enter Discount Code: SAVE At Checkout and Hit "APPLY"

Date: 2008-10-11 05:19 pm (UTC)So what are you going to do with all that stuff?
Do people really vandalize your car because of an Obama bumper sticker? Wow. That sucks. The only time I ever saw such a thing here was in 2004 as I walked home from my polling place. Someone had a GIGANTIC Bush/Cheney sign in their front yard, which is very much a rarity around here so I was quite surprised to see it. And someone had scrawled "ANTICHRIST" on it. Whoever did that might have been egged on by the smaller sign for Alan Keyes in the window. OMG, Alan Keyes.

Date: 2008-10-11 10:55 pm (UTC)I don't think the tomatoes are going to last much longer. OM NOM NOM. Most of it is probably destined for snacking, honestly. Except for the acorn squash, which is going to be roasted and then stuffed with roasted apples and honey.
I do strongly suspect that the Kerry sticker I had on my last car is what caused someone to dump what appeared to be honey bbq sauce all over my driver's side window and door while I was in Borders. (That stuff just does not come off without a lot of work; mostly it smears around. Yay.) I can't swear to that being the reason since I didn't see it happen, but there was no other obvious cause. That was out in Fauquier County where I work though; around here, there's not a lot of petty vandalism going on.

Date: 2008-10-11 06:05 pm (UTC)Our farmers market is also held on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon, and the West Lafayette one (which we haven't made it to yet) is Wednesday afternoons from 2-6, which annoys me because I can't get there, either.

Date: 2008-10-11 11:01 pm (UTC)There are a few good-sized farmers markets on the weekends here; Burke is on Saturday and the Dupont Circle (DC) market is on Sunday. Burke ended up being much closer to local than I thought it was; it turned out to only be about 15 minutes away.
